Our 10thAnnual “Taking Steps Towards College Success” event will be held on Sunday, October 21, 2018 and will continue to provide Arizona middle school and high school students with the tools and resources to become college bound, focused and prepared. Taking Steps Towards College Success will continue to address several community needs: 1) It raises awareness throughout the personal and professional community about the significant challenges Arizona faces with respect to the educational attainment rate of its youth – one of the most substantial threats to Arizona’s economic future; 2) It provides a robust resource fair where students and families have access to information from over 50 different organizations and educational institutions in one central location; and 3) It generates much-needed funding for BALF to continue our life-changing goals of closing the educational attainment gap and providing students and their families with programs that make college not just a dream, but a very true reality.

All the components of this event are focused solely on promoting higher education as a necessity and a reality for historically underserved, low-income and predominantly first generation students and their families. The day’s activities will start with a college-going resource fair at Phoenix Civic Space Park that will include over 50 organizations including non-profit organizations, in-state universities, military academies, and scholarship-granting organizations. A couple of years ago, we expanded the event to also include a series of college-going workshops for both students and families. This year, keeping with the theme of providing more resources, we will host an official College Goal FAFSA event during the resource fair. Students and families will be provided with the opportunity to receive one-on-one support with completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at the event. Each year, less than 25% of Arizona high school seniors complete the FAFSA, making it even more critical for Be A Leader to provide this support at our statewide event! With support from volunteers and ASU, our goal is to help a minimum of 200 students and families with this critical step in the college-going process!
